EDUCATION IN SAN ANTONIO
San Antonio is home to a wide variety of educational institutions. From prekinder programs all the way through PhD’s.
Each of the 19 public school districts within the metropolitan area of San Antonio are independently administered and accredited by the Texas Education Agency in Austin. Each of the school districts has an elected board and a superintendent who is appointed by the board. Currently funding is obtained from state and federal funds, and local property taxes which are levied by the individual school district.
In general a child will attend the school in the district where his family lives. In order to begin first grade a child must be 6 years old on or before September 1 of the year he/she starts school.
The state of Texas mandates testing at various grade levels to determine the mastery of basic skills
(especially in reading, language arts, math and science).
School calendars and registration dates vary from district to district so after you move into the area you will need to contact the appropriate school district for registration. Remember in order to register your child you will need the child’s birth certificate, proof of residence and immunization records. Children’s immunization records must be current and copies furnished to the schools as a condition of admission.
